Battery electric with energy harvesting

The largest mining trucks in the world run on batteries

ETF builds battery electric all-wheel-drive surface mining vehicles carrying 200 to 800 metric tonnes. There is no diesel engine and no turbine anywhere in the drivetrain. Only batteries.

Why ETF

Four things a diesel fleet cannot do

The drivetrain, the steering, the wheels and the maintenance model were redesigned together rather than one at a time. Each of the four below depends on the other three.

  1. /001/

    The largest trucks built

Payload starts at 200 metric tonnes and reaches 800 tonnes in the D8. ETF builds the largest mining trucks in the world.

  2. /002/

More output from the same pit

Narrower haul roads leave more of the pit as reserve instead of road. Reclaiming that footprint raises recoverable yield and disturbs less ground, on top of what the haulage itself saves.

  3. /003/

    Nothing burns at the face

Every ETF machine is fully electric and harvests its retarding energy. With no diesel engine and no turbine there is no particulate matter and no nitrogen oxide at the working face, and the drive runs quiet enough to cut the noise and vibration that wear a crew down across a shift.

  4. /004/

    95% technical availability

Components get exchanged rather than repaired on the vehicle. The truck goes back to work while the component is rebuilt in the workshop, which is why maintenance cost and downtime sit well below a diesel fleet.

Product range

Every model runs on the same haul road

Width is 7.6 m and height is 6.3 m right across the range, so an 800 tonne truck uses the same road as a 200 tonne truck. The larger models share common axle and wheel modules with the smaller ones and simply carry more of them, which keeps maintenance and parts logistics the same as capacity scales.

  • Width 7.6 m the same on every model
  • Height 6.3 m the same on every model
  • Haul road width 24.16 m trucks and haul trains alike
  • Drive All wheel drive with all wheel steering
  • Braking ABS and traction control on every wheel

Because of the modular design there is always a truck that meets the requirements of the project. All types can be supplied in haul train configuration.

Less road means more mine

Steering on all wheels gives every ETF truck a very short turning radius. Trucks and haul trains both need a total haul road width of 24.16 metres. Comparable large haul trucks need between 3.68 and 7.22 metres more than that.

Those metres come off the pit wall and go back into the reserve. Across a mine that is somewhere between 1,656,000 and 3,249,000 BCM of extra output, from roads that also cost less to build and less to maintain.

Haulage supplied by the tonne, not trucks sold

Equipment is supplied only under an Integrated Mining Haulage Contract. ETF does the loading and the hauling, maintains the haul roads, and the mine pays a fixed amount per tonne.

  • Paid per tonne

A fixed amount per tonne for the full ten years, so you always know your cost per tonne.

  • No capital expenditure

The mine owner finances no equipment. ETF supplies it, operates it and maintains it.

  • Ten year contract

Long enough to justify a workshop and a permanent crew stationed at your mine.

  • Workshop on site

ETF builds a workshop at your mine and staffs it with technicians, tools and parts.

  • More net mine output

Much narrower haul roads leave more of the pit as mine rather than road.

  • Production in rain, snow and fog

All wheel drive with ABS and traction control on every wheel holds the vehicle steady through rain, snow and poor visibility. Crews keep working in conditions that park a conventional fleet.

  • Fully managed by ETF

ETF carries all of it: operators, maintenance technicians, wheels, warranty claims and parts inventory. None of it lands on the mine.
